FAQ’s

All of your Thermal CorkShield™ questions, answered.

What is Thermal CorkShield and why is it considered one of the best exterior coatings for homes in Canada?

The best exterior coating for Canadian climates must handle freeze-thaw cycles, moisture, and long-term durability.

Thermal CorkShield by VIPEQ is designed specifically for these conditions, offering a breathable, flexible membrane that resists wear, reduces maintenance, and can be applied over existing surfaces without demolition.

It helps prevent cracking, reduces moisture buildup, and improves overall energy efficiency by creating a continuous exterior barrier and a modernized look, in the same installation time as a simple paint refresh. Thermal CorkShield is installed by only VIPEQ Certified Installers and backed by a 15-year limited warranty.

How long does Thermal CorkShield last?

When applied by a VIPEQ Certified Installer, Thermal CorkShield includes a 15-year limited warranty protecting you from chipping, peeling, or delaminating and is designed to perform for decades.

Unlike paint, which may need reapplication every few years, cork coatings from VIPEQ maintain their integrity and colour with minimal fade (typically 1–2% annually).

Does cork coating help reduce energy costs?

Thermal CorkShield acts as a thermal barrier that helps stabilize indoor temperatures and reduce energy loss.

By sealing cracks and improving the performance of your existing insulation, it can contribute to noticeable savings on heating and cooling costs over time.

Can Thermal CorkShield be applied over existing surfaces?

Yes. Thermal CorkShield can be applied over most existing surfaces including stucco, brick, wood, and metal siding.

This makes it an ideal solution for renovations, as it eliminates the need for costly removal or demolition.

What is the cost to have it applied on my building?

Cost varies depending on many factors. More than a lipstick, but less than a total wall overhaul.

How is the product applied?

Thermal CorkShield™ is spray-applied using a texture sprayer by one of our Certified Installers to ensure quality and consistency, every time.

What colours are available?

We currently have 30+ colours to choose from. Custom colours are available upon request with select Certified Installers.

Why use Thermal CorkShield instead of re-painting?

Repainting is a short-term solution that typically needs to be redone every 5–10 years depending on your desire to stay true to the original look and integrity.

Thermal CorkShield by VIPEQ is a long-term exterior coating designed for Canadian climates, creating a breathable, flexible membrane that resists cracking, peeling, and moisture buildup.

Unlike paint, it provides a thicker, more durable finish that reduces ongoing maintenance and protects buildings for decades.

What other uses are there for Thermal CorkShield™?

We have applied to RV roofs and walls (fiber glass and metal), ice fishing shacks, trailers, outdoor furniture, industrial equipment, tanks, and more!

Primarily used as an exterior wall finish, we can retrofit nearly any surface without demolition.

Ask your local Installer how Thermal CorkShield might be used on your project.

Is there a warranty?

All Vipeq Thermal CorkShield™ applications done according to the TDS over walls and by a Vipeq Certified Installer include a 15-year Limited Product Warranty protecting you from chipping, peeling, or delaminating cork for 15 years minimum.

Is it toxic? Can my pets, kids and I be at home when it is sprayed?

We are proud to offer a water-based product with other natural and renewable ingredients that result in a non VOC and non-toxic formula, even when airborne. Certified Installers simply gear-up to stay clean, most pets, children and yourself are safe to watch the transformation unfold.

Do pests like it?

NO! Cork is naturally pest and rodent resistant, and when in our Thermal CorkShield performs as an effective deterrent to chewing, burrowing and pecking.

Woodpeckers cannot make noise for mating, nor can they chip or crack away at Thermal CorkShield for bugs, leaving them with no choice but to move on from your home and yard.

What about hail? Will it chip or break?

NO! Thermal CorkShield stays buoyant in all temperatures, protecting the surface it is sprayed on by deflecting impact and dampening noise. Hail will bounce off your TCS finish, pleasing insurance companies and protecting your family.

Can it be repaired?

Absolutely! Consistent, proprietary supply ensures we will always have your CorkShield color available when disaster strikes.

10x less fade than traditional paints will make color matching a breeze, and the spray-application ensures a seamless finish, every time.

Will I have to modify my building to support the product?

No, 88% of Thermal CorkShield’s volume is air. This translates to a lower density; approx. between 0.12-0.24 quartz/ lb, so your beams and tall commercial buildings are ready for reno when you are.

Does cork add R-value to my home or building?

Thermal CorkShield™ works along with an already existing or properly engineered wall as a “Functioning Finish”. Often the R-Value in a wall is compromised by drafts, convection, conduction, or reflection of energy. Vipeq Thermal CorkShield™ projected at a wall fills in gaps and cracks creating a full exterior envelope. Rated with a K-Value similar to windows at 0.058W/mK. Thermal CorkShield™ effectively slows down the transfer of energy, supporting the inner R—value behind it.

Is Thermal CorkShield™ an eco-friendly product?

With our proprietary water-based resin and natural, renewable cork, we are proud to offer an environmentally friendly and sustainable product.

The bark of the cork tree is removed in portions every 8-12 years by hand, releasing large amounts of oxygen into the environment. The tree will continue to grow for up to 250 years, creating new bark for harvest and absorbing extra CO2 in the process. Before being mixed into our Vipeq resin, cork is made of 98% air, afterwards, we boast a minimum 80% cork contents in each pail, lessening the burden on fuel for shipping.

Once on a home or building, Thermal CorkShield™ can offer energy savings from 10% up to 50%, depending on the structure’s age and type when applied expertly by a Vipeq Certified Installer.
